Medwin Heart Foundation will host the 3rd edition of Prevent India programme in Hyderabad on February 19 and 20, 2011. The event is organised with an aim to deliberate on the 'when and how' to control risks of  hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, smoking, diabetes mellitus, obesity and thrombogenicity including non communicable diseases.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD's) like cardiovascular, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes account for  high rates of mortality both globally as well as in the low and middle income countries (LMCs). Worldwide, NCDs account for 60 per cent which is 35 million of global deaths whereas, the largest burden ie. 80 per cent  of 28 million is reported in the LMCs, making it a  major cause of poverty and an urgent development issue.

The cumulative evidence in cardiovascular risk reduction by controlling the known risk factors needs to be emphasised in South Asian countries, which have been seeing increasing risks with economic development. During the two day event there will be updates on screening, pharmacological intervention and lifestyle modification. This event will focus on creating awareness that at least 80 per cent of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided through healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco smoke.

The programme will be useful to cardiologists, physicians, rehabilitation specialists, family doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, social workers, public health practitioners, dietitians, pharmacists and healthcare personnel taking care of cardiac patients.


The two-day event will be addressed by medical experts like professor K Srinath Reddy, president Public Health Foundation of India, Dr Prabhakaran, Center for Chronic Disease Control, Executive Director of Initiative for Cardiovascular Health Research, Dr Ramesh Babu, MD, Medwin Heart Foundation and ideator of Prevent India, Dr Mala Rao, president, Indian Institute of Public Health, Dr Arun Chockalingham, director, office of Global Health, NHLBI, NIH, USA.

As part of the Prevent India 2011 programme, the organisers are also conducting a painting competition titled 'Art for Heart' to promote the importance of cardio health from February 13th to19th, 2001 in Hyderabad which will involve professional painters and children. Further, the program includes debates, demonstration projects on prevention in practice, poster competition, public forum where speakers help raise awareness of heart disease in India and a Health Walk.

Over 200 physicians, diabetologists, family practioners, health policy administrators, corporate wellness officers, public health officials, school health staff, dieticians, hotel chefs and foundations active in the field of public health especially prevention of cardiovascular diseases and other chronic diseases will converge at the Prevent India 2011 conference.
